Non-Toxic Bath and Shower Products

I am against the use of gel for the shower and other products for the bath which I consider superfluous… Why? Because, as we will see in the chapter on “ Non -toxic Shampoos and Conditioners ”, the products for the bath are elaborated with a cocktail of chemicals, of which the most used are Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, Sodium Laureth Sulfate, Sodium Lauroyl Sarcosinate, Sodium Laureth Sulfosuccinate, Disodium EDTA, the PEGs (which make the skin more permeable, facilitating the penetration of foreign bodies) and Cocamidopropyl Betaine. The effects of these ingredients on human health and the environment are very well explained in the chapter that I have just named. A good soap and a shampoo should be sufficient for a good personal hygiene. The shower gels that enjoy a good harmlessness are very rare, and because Sodium Lauryl Sulfate and Cocamidopropyl Betaine are accepted by certain certifications, it is thus necessary to double our prudence and to buy only bath products certified by BDIH or make the verifications that are essential. I must specify that not all manufacturers use these ingredients even if they are authorized by the Specifications of certification.

All these products represent a risk of useless exposure to toxicity knowing that the products for the body must have a good pH so as not to drain the skin and that they must be free from synthetic ingredients, which is not the case even with certified organic products. But, I am not here to teach you morals, so then, here are some solutions of non-toxic bath and showers products :

New ProductMoisturizing Non Foaming Bath Lotion by ARGANAT CANADA, 125 ml, $ 44.95 (Geranium, Eucalyptus or Seeweed, all rated 1 on Skin Deep).

INCI : Aqua, Rosa Damascena Flower Water, Aloe Barbadensis (Aloe Vera) Leaf Juice, Argania Spinoza Oil, Persea Gratissima (Avocado) Fruit Oil, Olea Europaea (Olive) Oil, Maris Sal, Kaolinite (French White Clay), Alpha Tocopherol (Natural Vitamin E), Cetearyl Wheat Straw Glycosides And Cetearyl Alcohol (Vegetal Wax), Calendula Officinalis Flower Water, Lavandula Angustifolia (Lavender) Flower Oil, Citrus Aurantium Amara (Bitter Orange) Bud Oil, Pelargonium Graveolens Flower Oil

Lavera Shower & Bath Gel, 150 ml, 16.95 $, certified NaTrue*
Ingdients: Water (Aqua), Glycerin, Coco Glucoside, Capryl/Capryl Glucoside, Sodium Coco-Sulfate, Mentha Piperita (Peppermint) Leaf Water *, Melissa Officinalis Water*, Hamamelis Virginiana (Witch Hazel) Water* , Xanthan Gum, Alcohol*, Fragrance/ Parfum (natural essential oils), Citral**, Geraniol**, Limonene** Linalool**
* ingrédients issus de l’agriculture biologique, ** huiles essentielles naturelles

As I explained in the chapter on  « Labels and Certifications », NaTrue one star is a certification which is affixed on products not being able, by the nature of their manufacturing, to contain many ingredients resulting from nature directly or from certified organic agriculture. Notice the presence of several ingredients with ** being on the list of the possibly allergenic products; test them before buying, because these products are also sold in small individual baggies. I have tried this product and yes, it is very agreeable to use but 16.95 $ per 150 ml, is it worth it knowing that in these products water can represent up to 90% of the contents? An alternative with less odoriferous substances in the same collection of Lavera is the orange and argousier shower Gel .

You will find in the BODY SPA range of Lavera this shower gel in several aromas as well as body oils and bath salts. Once again, I think it is expensive for so small a benefit…

Melvita fragrance free Foam Bath  (floral water from lime)  500ml, 20 $, certified organic Cosmebio and ECOCERT. The ingredients are not indicated on the label of the product, it is necessary to go and see on the Melvita site. This product contains Ammonium Lauryl Sulfate, and Cocamidopropyl Betaine ingredient considered “passable” by Rita Stiens but “classified as expected to be toxic” by Skin Deep. Most destabilizing is however to read that it also contains perfume (fragrance from essential oils since is certified product), it is written FOAM BATH NOT SCENTED though! And it is not a question of Tilia Cordata Flower Water (floral water from lime)… Well, naively I believed that the foam (which is very transitory) was going to smell a little bit like lime, but I ensure you that it is not at all the case, it remains neutral and insensitive to our phantasm even if some product is added. I remained in philosophical doubt during my bath and I reflected on what else I could have done with my 20 dollars… I promised myself that next time around I was rather going to add a few drops of an essential oil to my bathwater … A beautiful example of a superfluous purchase in our bathrooms, even if it is certified organic…
Ingredients: Aqua [Water], Tilia Cordata Water [Tilia Cordata Flower Water]*, Decyl Glucoside, Ammonium Lauryl Sulfate, Cocamidopropyl Betaine , Sodium Chloride, Parfum [Fragrance] , Potassium Sorbate, Citric Acid, Coco-Glucoside, Glyceryl Oleate, Sodium Benzoate.(*) Ingredient resulting from organic agriculture.

Les Soins Corporels L’herbier Relaxation – Détente: thalasso-aromatic sea salts  16.99 $, 190 gr., with real flowers of lavender and camomile in your bathwater… and a product for relaxation indeed with very pleasant flavours.

Solutions from nature:

- a few drops of essential oil of lavender or of tangerine which provide a feeling of relaxation and appeasing, and some olive oil drops in the water of your bathtub will successfully replace all the bath oils sold at indecent prices and other products designed to give flavour to your bath…

- quite simply grind a few spoonfuls of oats of your pantry and disperse them in the bathwater instead of buying the bath-treatments at the pharmacy…
