Non-Toxic Hand Lotions

Much research shows that more than 100.000 chemical ingredients are used on the market today; 85% of these substances were never tested to check their impact on human health and no study was carried out until now on their synergic and bio-accumulative effects. According to Environmental Defence Canada, before a woman leaves her house in the morning, she has sprinkled herself with 126 chemical ingredients of which several are toxic and dangerous to health.

What is even more shocking is that, as authors Stacy Malkan [1] and Gillian Deacon [2]  also point out, these same carcinogenic ingredients, toxic, allergens are offered as gifts in conventional cosmetic products gracefully distributed to women affected by breast cancer within the framework of the program “Look Good Feel Better”. “This program, free for all women who live with cancer, is an initiative of the Foundation of the Canadian Cosmetic,  Toiletry and Fragrance Association. The sessions of “Look Good Feel Better” are offered throughout the country, mainly in hospitals and cancer centers. The Canadian Cancer Society is associated with this happy initiative since its very beginning in 1992  ». [3]   Although the intention is praiseworthy and although many voluntary workers dedicate themselves, body and soul, to come to the assistance of these patients, this unhappy lobbying initiative and “pink-washing” is subsidized by this industry even as it causes misfortune and when one points the finger at it since decades.“Look Good Feel Better” should be precisely the occasion to educate these women against the dangers of the conventional cosmetics industry and to precisely show them the health alternatives available on the market. I hope that the Canadian Breast Cancer Society will be receptive to my comment and that one will not have to undertake a quarrelsome campaign to bring the changes necessary in the gift box offered to women affected by breast cancer. “More American women died of breast cancer in the 20 last years than the total number of Americans killed in the First & Second World War, in the Korean war and in the war of Vietnam.”   [4]

And since I am at it, I allow myself to give to the people affected by cancer the same counsel that the doctors gave me: to only eat, or as much as possible, organic food. On  or on numerous English or French sites, research is unanimous: our vegetables and our fruits are seriously contaminated by pesticides, insecticides, and chemical fertilizers. Thus, in an investigation published under the title “Dr. OZ’s Most Wanted”, up to 59 pesticides were detected in the residues of certain strawberries, up to 42 different pesticides on apples, 48 on spinache and on peaches cultivated in  conventional orchards one found up to 62 pesticides. [5]

In 2011:

◦ One estimated at 23.400 the number of women who would receive a diagnosis of breast cancer and at       5.100 the number of those who would die from it.

◦ One also estimated that 190 men would receive a diagnosis of breast cancer and that 55 would die from it.

◦ On average, each day, 64 Canadian women would learn that they were affected by breast cancer.

◦ On average, each day, 14 Canadian women would die from complications of the disease. [6]

A word to the wise is enough!

Lavera Basis Sensitiv Hand Lotion , certified NaTrue *, 75 ml. Comments from Chantal : The odor is distinct and pleasant. It grows blurred after a few minutes. The texture of the cream is not too fatty taking into account the fact that it contains shea butter.  It penetrates rather well leaving nevertheless a layer a little sticking on the skin but after a few minutes that disappears and the hands are really soft.

The anti-bacterial products and disinfectants for the hands, in general, contain two ingredients to be effective: alcohol or triclosan. In her book There’s Lead in your Lipstick , Canadian author Gillian Deacon explains us with scientific arguments which are the dangers of triclosan.

Triclosan, which is also very present in toothpastes, is classified by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency as a possible cancerogenic for human beings.

Plenty of research has shown the dangers of this ingredient:

- a study undertaken by the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health concluded that triclosan creates carcinogenic dioxanes when it is exposed to sunlight.

- researchers from the Virginia Polytechnic Institute found that triclosan and its cousin triclocarban react in contact with chlorified drinking water by producing dangerous chloroform levels in water whereas chloroform is classified as a possible carcinogenic for humans related to miscarriages and bladder cancer.

- other studies show that triclosan can disturb the thyroid hormones and affect the cellular functions.

- in April 2010 the US Food and Drug Administration announced its intention to study triclosan and the links between this substance and hormonal disturbances and the resistance that it created in humans to anti-bacterial antibiotics.

- in 2009 the Canadian Medical Association requested the Canadian Government to banish all anti-bacterial products by quoting the evidence proving that triclosan causes a resistance to antibiotics and that it was found in mother’s milk.

Many experts blame anti-bacterial household products for being the cause of the unceasing growth of child allergies.

In our desire to get rid of bacteria we make our immune system increasingly weaker and the bacteria increasingly stronger”. (quoted from the above-mentioned book)

Antibacterial soaps? Not necessary, according to experts at the Food and Drug Administration (FDA, 2013 study).
