Miscellaneous Products

I am asked for information on ” Boo Bamboo ” products (shampoos, children, face lotions, etc. ) available on our market.
The products are not listed on Skin Deep, but the Website of the company is transparent and displays the lists of the ingredients of the products. The company says, on the same Website, that the products are ” All Natural Formula • Paraben & DEA Free • Safe to use on sensitive skin .”
What is it really and what ingredients are in the formulas?

The ” Natural Flavour ” in the Face Wash , The Anti-Wrinkles Face Cream and other products as the “Natural Fragrance (Parfum )” in the Baby Wash & Shampoo and Baby Lotion are not recognized by the INCI nomenclature. The ingredients may be natural, but it takes the NAME, as the law stipulates, so that the consumer can identify them.
In the meantime, you be the judge !

Why aren’t the Usana products selected on this Guide of non-toxic hygiene, beauty and cosmetic products ?

Although more ”clean” compared to other products from conventional industry the Usana products use ingredients disadvised by the lists which we retained in the chapter ” Are cosmetics toxic? ” As an example one can quote the PEGs and generic Fragrance or Perfume.

Here’s how the company justifies the presence of the” Perfume” on the list of ingredients.

“Question: Do any of the Sense products contain fragrance?

Answer: Yes, the Sense products have always contained fragrance. Fragrance is an integral part of the success of personal care products, and even products that claim to be “fragrance free” are not necessarily void of fragrance ingredients. The FDA has made the following regulation regarding this claim: “Fragrance Free: implies that a cosmetic product so labeled has no perceptible odor. Fragrance ingredients may be added to a fragrance-free cosmetic to mask any offensive odor originating from the raw materials used, but in a smaller amount than is needed to impart a noticeable scent.” As this states, fragrances are part of almost any product – even fragrance-free ones.  We have gone to great lengths to find and use a fragrance that is non-allergenic for most individuals. The individual components that make up the fragrance are a highly guarded secret (like a recipe) and are not available to the public .”

Times of well-kept secrets are over. The consumers have the right to know what exactly the hygiene and beauty products contain. They have the right to be informed of the harmlessness of the products that they buy and that they consume. Posting the lists of ingredients on the Website of the company would also be an appreciated gesture towards transparency which would make it possible for the consumer to judge for himself.

Fragrance and Perfume , an edifying article on the Website of the David Suzuki Foundation will be able to convince you.

Another brand of cosmetics which is popular in Quebec and that is sold at the representative only is Mary Kay : about ten products out of 140 are graded 3 but the formulations are old, going back to 2006 and 2007, because the information of the companies has not been updated….

Avon : 35 products out of 253 analyzed on  GoodGuide have a grade for health between 8 and 10 (13%) and 68 products out of 708 graded on  Skin Deep  have a grade between 0 and 3 (9.5%).

Altearah Bio , ”the colour cosmetic reflection of my mood” places at the disposal of the Quebec consumers 14 compositions of essential oils ready for use certified organic by Nature & Progrès, spread over a range of 14 colours, each one corresponding to a mood.

It concerns here perfume sprays of a rather aromatherapeutic value, perfumes of scent because with a concentration of 10% essential oils these products are ” vigorous” enough and lend themselves less to personal, cutaneous use. To test before buying some. More details on how to use the colours, the prices and the points of sale on   Altearah Bio .

Arbonne Products

Although much cleaner than conventional products and without Fragrance, Arbonne still uses some problematic ingredients such as oxybenzone (endocrine disruptor), phenoxyethanol and a few PEG .

A very good article by Meghan Telpner will give you more details about Arbonne products and unfortunately, Arbonne is not living up to what they claim to be.

Jouviance Products

A user asked me what I think about Jouviance products … I want to say once more, an analysis of ingredients is not a point of view or an opinion, these are the ingredients of INCI formula and they speak for themselves according to strict and scientific criteria…

The Jouviance company has not signed The Campaign for Safe Cosmetics and their products are not listed on Skin Deep.

Two positive comments to make:

-the ingredients are posted on the website of the company which is rare, even for certified organic products.

-the company does not use the generic Parfum (Fragrance)1 in the products I’ve seen on the site and there is no red ingredient (at least in the product I analyzed).

Here is the analysis of a product, ingredient by ingredient (for the meaning of the colors, see Chapter Skin Deep and other tools …)

Jouviance Crème anti-âge rajeunissante ( Normale à sèche), 93.50 $, 50 ml.

INCI :  Aqua, Ethylhexyl Methoxycinnamate 6 , Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride 0 , Cetearyl Alcohol 1 , Plukenetia Volubilis Seed Oil 0 , Glycerin 0 , PPG-2 Myristyl Ether Propionate 0 , C12-15 Alkyl Benzoate 1 , Isocetyl Stearate 0-1 , Steareth-2 3-6 , Imperata Cylindrica Root Extract 0 , Myristyl Myristate 4 , Isopropyl Myristate 0-1 , Palmitoyl Pentapeptide-4 0 , Palmitoyl Oligopeptide 0 , Palmitoyl Tetrapeptide-7 0 , Ceramide 3 (synthetic) 0 , Ceramide 6 (synthetic) 0 , Ceramide 2 (synthetic) 0 , Titanium Dioxide 1- 3 , Ceteth-10 Phosphate 3 , Dicetyl Phosphate 0 , Tribehenin 0 , PEG-10 Rapeseed Sterol 3-6 , Caprylyl Glycol 0 , Carbomer 0 , Acrylates/C10-30 Alkyl Acrylate Crosspolymer 0 , Butylene Glycol 0-1 , Polysorbate 20 3 , Steareth-20 3-6 , Ethylhexylglycerin 1 , Phenoxyethanol 3-4 , Disodium EDTA 1 , Potassium Hydroxide 1 , Chlorhexidine Digluconate 4 , Potassium Sorbate 3 , Citric Acid 2 , Sodium Citrate 0 , Biotin , BHT 5 2

As I explain in the chapter Reading the labels, in a moisturizing, the first 4-8 ingredients form the basis of the product and their quantity also gives the quality of the product. Here, the first ingredient is water (it can go up to 70-80% of the total volume of the product, the exact percentage only the manufacturer can know), the second ingredient in terms of importance is the Ethylhexyl Methoxycinnamate which is a photo-allergen and endocrine disruptor UV filter rated “red” by Skin Deep and by Rita Stiens. Third ingredient, Caprylic / Capric Triglyceride is listed on Skin Deep “gray”, which means that to date, no study has been done to know its long and short term hasard, so we do not really know what that we put on our skin (there are also 8 gray ingredients in this formula, which is a little too much…), then comes Cetearyl Alcohol which is a stabilizer or texturizer, an alcohol that can be of vegetable or synthetic origin, here it is not specified. Finally, on a fifth position, Inca Inchi seed oil, which is a good oil,  best known for its essential fatty acids, but on which there is no scientific study on its long or short-term effects (another gray ingredient in the  base of the product) and only in the sixth position (perhaps 1 or 2% of the product?) the  old good glycerin, an advisable ingredient if is coming from a plant (vegetable source) or this is not specified in this formula. To finish with the base of the product, the seventh and eighth ingredients in terms of importance, are two synthetic origin ingredients: PPG-2 Myristyl Ether Propionate and C12-15 Alkyl Benzoate.

In my opinion, there are many chemicals in this product and a very few natural ingredients such as oils, butters and waxes … If I had $ 100 to invest in beauty products, I’d buy myself some good certified organic vegetable oils (see Chapter Oil, Butter and other active ingredients) which are really effective and have active ingredients that provide the skin with a good hydrolipidic film well balanced.

Now, is up to you, you make the choices …

Read also the two annotations (1 and 2) to complete this product description.

Feminine hygiene and Lubricants

Liquid Organics , a non-toxic lubricant on sale in Canada but not in Quebec (at least not in Montreal according to the “store locator”) which offers to women a healthier choice, without glycerin and parabens; it is a natural lubricant containing water mixed with organically certified botanical extracts like Aloe Vera and alfalfa as well as vitamin E, green tea, hibiscus, flax and seeds of sunflower.

Remains to test the effectiveness. For more details consult:  http://www.sliquidorganics.com/products.html

Lubricants containing water and oil conceived by two women who wished to put some excitement in their sexual life without jeopardizing their health however. Products manufactured without parabens, glycerin, propylene glycol and other irritants resulting from the petrochemical industry. Vigilance and prudence when feminine hygiene is concerned!

vagisil.png Several lubricants and products of female hygiene sold in big supermarkets abound with ingredients dangerous for health. For example the formula of «  Vagisil Anti-Ich Creme, Maximum Strenght  » is rated  8 on   Skin Deep :
Active Ingredients:  Benzocaine (20%),  Resorcinol (3%).Inactive Ingredients: Water, Mineral Oil, Cetyl Alcohol, Propylene Glycol, Glyceryl Stearate,  PEG-100 Stearate , Isopropyl Palmitate, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice, Tocopheryl Acetate,  Retinyl Palmitate , Zea Mays (Corn) Oil, Cholecalciferol, Lanolin Alcohol,  Fragrance Methylparaben , Carbomer, Isopropyl Myristate, Isopropyl Stearate, Sodium Sulfite, Triethanolamine , Trisodium HEDTA.

Several ingredients are connected to cancer (resorcinol or the PEG 100 Stearate possibly contaminating with the cancer-causing 1.4 dioxane). There is paraben even in the  K-Y !

“Chemicals of concern such as carcinogens, reproductive toxins, endocrine disruptors, and allergens are being used on, or even in, the extremely permeable mucus membranes of the vaginal area” reveals the repport Chem Fatale by Women’s Voices for the Earth.

Here’s a quite simple recipe for a vaginal shower at home which will avoid you all the chemicals like the perfumes or the hormonal disturber octoxynol-9 which are found in the products of female hygiene (which moreover modify also the balance of the vaginal flora) on sale in pharmacies: 2 liters of tepid water, half a cup of vinegar cider, 10 drops of essential oil from a tea tree (or melaleuca or tea tree oil) or in smaller quantity: a soup spoon of apple cider vinegar, two glasses of water and 2 drops of HE of melaleuca. Let the solution rest for two hours before use.

1 When there is no Fragrance listed in the INCI formula, most companies use masking products which is permitted by the law, see more about this in chapter Reading the labels.

Butylated hydroxytoluene ( BHT ) “is a toluene-based ingredient used as a preservative in food and personal care products” (see Skin Deep). BHA and BHT are found in moisturizers, makeup and other products. They are suspected of interfering with hormone function and carcinogens (BHA). Harmful to fish and wildlife. (see David Suzuki Dirty List)

Here are some popular anti-stretch mark products (especially during pregnancy) analyzed according to SKIN DEEP criterias (contribution of  Sophie A. from Paris)

- some ingredients like : Geraniol, Linalool, Limonene, Coumarin, Eugenol have a fairly high allergenic potential, they are rather poorly rated on Skin Deep, but noted well elsewhere, see chapter Skin Deep and other tools … for more information.

- some certified organic products, especially European manufacturing display the generic ” Perfume” even if the components are not synthetic, the product is then penalized on its global score, see chapter Skin Deep and other tools … for more information.

-disodium EDTA ingredient it is well noted by Skin Deep but poorly noted elsewhere

- choose simple products without Parfum ( Fragrance ) or with minimal ingredients of chemical origin (orange color) and no red ; regarding their effectiveness, share the comments below please!
