Non-toxic Skin Care and Hygiene Products for Men

Global sales of male toiletries other than razors, blades and shaving cream will rise 5 percent to $17.5 billion this year, surpassing the shaving segment for the first time, according to Euromonitor.

Canadian men are using more personal care products than ever before. But what’s actually in them? Some of the chemicals in these products are linked to cancer, birth defects, sperm damage, obesity, asthma and other chronic health problems.

Non-Toxic Shaving Creams and After-Shave Balsams

Although the use of the electro-shaver is pretty widespread, many men still shave in a more traditional way requiring a cream. For these men, the criteria of a good cream are comfort, the scent and the feeling of freshness which emerges after shaving. It seems that the dangerous aspect of the ingredients does not appear very high in the list of priorities. By integrating this section in this Guide of non-toxic hygiene, beauty and cosmetic products I thought of all these men who, without knowing, might be making bad choices for their health each day.

Here are some good options but do not forget, a good razor called classic safety razor with steel recyclable blades, Aleppo soap and a real badger are the greenest and most economical choices! Avoid at all cost disposable razors!

Rarer products or on order via Internet

Miessence Shave Gel – Certified Organic , classified 1 on  Skin Deep .

Several after-shave lotions in Aubrey Organics  and Aubrey Organics Shave Cream– White Tea & Citrus, Aubrey Organics Shave Orange Cream,  are very well graded on Skin Deep , 1 , you can order them on line if you do not find them in the stores.

Several Dr. Bronner’s shaving creams like Dr. Bronner’s Magic Peppermint Spearmint Shaving Gel, Dr. Bronner’s Magic Baby (Unscented) Shaving Gel, Dr. Bronner’s Magic Lavender Shaving Gel are very well graded on  Skin Deep , 1 .  If you find them in the boutiques, do not hesitate!

Avene After Shave Balm is also a pretty popular product, it is listed 2 on Skin Deep  because it contains triclosan.

According to Adria Vasil book Ecoholic Body, 3 to 4 drops of shaving oil Cromwell and Cruthers a Canadian product obtained from a mixture of rich and soothing oils without any synthetic filter, replace successfully and without adverse side effects any shaving cream or gel.

At the pharmacy

Gillette Foamy Shaving Cream Regular and several shaving creams from the Gillette range are graded  4 on   Skin Deep  but the ingredients are quite problematic… You be the judge!

To avoid:

In the same company,  Gillette Series  Shave Gel Moisturizing  is among the products graded lowest (the least recommended) because of the ingredients, a grade of 2/10 on health on  GoodGuide .
To also avoid  Gillette Fusion After Shave Gel, Hydra Cool (after shaving) which has the highest grade of dangeron   Skin Deep , 10 , with 5 parabens and 4 PEGs in the ingredients.

just like:

Gillette Complete Skincare Multigel Aerosol Shave Gel, Fragrance Free (shaving cream), rated  10 on  Skin Deep.
Ingredients : Water, Laureth 23 , Stearoyl Sarcosine, Isopentane, Myristyl Alcohol, Triethanolamine , Laureth 4, Myristoyl Sarcosine, Isobutane , Glycerin, Mineral Oil, Peg-10 Soya Sterol , Peg-23m , Polyquaternium-10, Niacinamide, Tocopheryl Acetate , Hydroxyethylcellulose, Dmdm Hydantoin , Eucalyptus Globulus Leaf Oil, Hydroxypropylcellulose, Propylene Glycol, Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Leaf Oil, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice, Triclosan , Bisabolol, Retinyl Palmitate , Zea Mays (Corn) Oil, Iodopropynyl Butylcarbamate , Melaleuca Alternifolia (Tea Tree) Leaf Oil, Mentha Viridis (Spearmint) Leaf Oil, Methylchloroisothiazolinone , Methylisothiazolinone , Tocopherol, Blue 1.
Also avoid, Gillette Satin Care Shave Gel for Dry Skin (shaving cream), classified  9 on   Skin Deep .

Finally, Vaseline products are often popular with men, but they are not quite recommendable. Vaseline Intensive Care Total Moisture is listed 9 on Skin Deep  and Vaseline Aloe Vera 8.

Check the ingredients before going to the pharmacy to buy your products, a visit on Skin Deep will convince the most sceptical…

An advantageous solution, less expensive, more practical and safe from a harmlessness point-of- view for shaving is the Aleppo Soap which is described on the page concerning “ Non-Toxic Soaps ” in the Guide of non-toxic hygiene, beauty and cosmetic products .

The alum stone (or Deodoroche ) has also been used for a long time by men (my father also made use of it) as an after-shave to alleviate the fire of the razor: its astringent action makes it possible to avoid the effects of incarnated hairs and its coagulating action avoids the bleeding after the small cuts of shaving. The healing, disinfectants, deodorant or rod producing properties of the alum stone are due to the bacteriostatic qualities of alum.

To also avoid among the products of body care for man:

Nivea for Men Revitalizing Lotion Q10 , rated  9 on   Skin Deep .
Actifs Ingredients: Ensulizole; Octinoxate , Oxybenzone .
Non actifs Ingredients: Water, Glycerin, Glyceryl Stearate, C12-15 Alkyl Benzoate, Cetearyl Alcohol, Methyl Palmitate, Propylene Glycol, Triisostearin, Cyclopentasiloxane, Panthenol, Distarch Phosphate, PEG-40 Stearate , Cyclohexasiloxane, Myristyl Myristate , Tocopheryl Acetate (Vitamin E), Hamamelis Virginiana (Witch Hazel) Extract, Ubiquinone, Alcohol Denat. , Fragrance , Carbomer, Sodium Hydroxide, Phenoxyethanol, Methylparaben , Diazolidinyl Urea , TetrasodiumIminodisuccinate.

I highly advise you to read the chapters “ Reading the labels ” and “ Are cosmetics toxic? ” or to do your own research to understand to what degree certain ingredients present in the products of personal care can damage the reproductive and hormonal system in men…

For the other products like non-toxic   shampoos , non-toxic   toothpastes , non-toxic   soaps , non-toxic deodorants look at the respective chapters. The difference between the products “for men” and the other products is often, in accordance with the reading of the labels, on the level of the scent which is a little more “masculine” and especially on the level of the price! If however you prefer the “virile” scent I advise Logona to you, some Druide products (certified ECOCERT) and if you are lucky in your area, Melvita for men, (certified Cosmebio and ECOCERT.)

In Druide, vintage cocoa body milk and red tea of Africa will unfailingly please men not only because of its cinnamon flavour which is a little spicy but discrete but also because of its “multi- use” functionality which enables it to be used for the face, the hands and the body at the same time.

Here are the other BDIH certified  Logona products for men: they are not referred to on Skin Deep (except some shampoos) and I did not check the ingredients, but they all are BDIH certified, therefore besides the scenting substances which can cause certain allergies in more sensitive people, there are no toxic ingredients: Logona after-shave lotion, 26.95 $, Logona after-shave Balsam, 23.95 $, Logona hydrating gel, 23.95 $, Logona shampoo, 17.95 $, Logona hairstyling gel 16.95 $, Logona déo-spray 21.95 $.

Green Beaver specifies several organic body lotions certified by ECOCERT (lavender, rosemary), it suffices to find the one which is appropriate to you.

Mâles en péril ( Males in danger) is a documentary film by Sylvie Gilman and Thierry Lestrade, which received the Europa 2008 prize for the “best televised program of current affairs”. It is available on ARTE, in French.

An alarming decrease in the number of spermatozoa, nature which is feminizing, phthalates which are found in human blood, here are some disturbing facts about which this documentary informs us. Several scientific experiments are presented including one where 26 young men are coated with creams containing phthalates and parabens, two hormonal disturbing ingredients (one of the principal sources of exposure to phthalates are the cosmetics). Using blood tests, it is shown that the phthalates had entered the blood stream one hour after the application of the creams.

Disconcerting fact in this documentary to counter the argument of the conventional cosmetic industry which shouts high and loud that the amounts of ingredients against which the militants for safe cosmetics shout even louder and firmer are “negligible and inoffensive”: during a scientific experiment in laboratory conditions concerning the exposure to bisphenol A (another hormonal disturber forbidden in Canada since 2010), researchers note that it is not “the amount” that counts but rather the moment and the exposure time.

Men use on average six separate products per day with 85 ingredients. Certain ingredients are hormonally active, some of them being specifically related to disorders of the male reproductive system. For example, the phthalates were associated with the modification of the hormonal levels of men and boys and the deterioration of their spermatozoa.

Lead (lead acetate) is a neurotoxin present in popular hair dyes for man like Grecian 16 (note for health on GoodGuide: 0/10!) and other colourings of gray hair for men.  [2]
