China’s inward-looking culture reflected in Yu Hua’s unforgettable novel Brothers.

China-Heart Brothers in English by Yu Hua

The Author

Yu Hua is a writer of many talents. His novel To Live was a literary success and has been adapted into a film and television series. His writings often reflect the chaos of a time like the Cultural Revolution that Yu himself experienced as a child. However, unlike Lu Xun who also wrote about a certain time period in China’s history, Yu Hua’s work never seems to be geared towards a non-Chinese audience. His writings are always a reflection of China’s inward looking culture. In this sense, Brothers is no exception. It was awarded the French distinction, Prix Courrier International de la littérature étranger in 2008.

Brothers is a novel that will not be forgotten soon.
